Eldoret Orphanage

The orphanage run by Open Arms International is outside of Eldoret, Kenya. The area is in the mountains of western Kenya and is very scenic. There are around 35 kids here, some of who are orphaned when their parents died from AIDS or as a result of violence such as what occured after the 2007 elections. Some are also here because their parent can no longer care for them due to issues such as drug or alcohol addiction.

David Gallagher, who runs Open Arms, and Meschach, the guard at the gate. Meschach worked many years in the prisons of Kenya and came here when he retired...and he has a son named Abednego. Really!

We toured the existing facilities, one of three house/dormitories where the kids and the house parents live. Yes, those are mud huts.

The kitchen...also made of mud/clay. Lillian is one of the house parents and also cooks.

Matt, a member of our team showing the kids their pictures. They love having their photos taken.

Those are some big eyes

Obviously they are very happy here.

Jim trying to mimic some dance moves.

New dormitories under construction. (I don't think OSHA has an office nearby)

Each stone is hand-chiseled. (David has tried to get them to use gloves, goggles, etc...but to no aviail)

A sample of the scenery around the property
